Gasfitting is restricted work in New Zealand. Only people authorised by the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board (PGDB) may do it, and for good reason: a poor joint or an undersized pipe can lead to a leak, a fire or carbon monoxide inside the house.
Our certifying gasfitters carry out residential and light commercial gas work across Wellington, the Hutt Valley, Porirua and the Kāpiti Coast, on both natural gas and LPG. Whether you are adding a gas cooktop, running a line to an outdoor fire, setting up an LPG bottle station or moving appliances in a renovation, we plan the job, do it to the standard and leave you with the certificate.
Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

Gas fitting work we do

- New gas pipework from the meter or LPG bottles to appliances
- Connecting cooktops, ovens, fires, heaters and water heaters
- LPG bottle stations, regulators and automatic changeover valves
- Extending or moving gas lines during kitchen and bathroom renovations
- Outdoor gas: barbecue points, patio heaters and outdoor fires
- Capping off and making safe appliances you no longer use
- Pressure testing and safety checks when buying or selling a home
Natural gas and LPG around the region
Powerco owns the natural gas network across Wellington, the Hutt Valley and Porirua. It says that if you live close to existing gas pipes you can most likely connect for free, and its online address checker shows whether gas runs past your property. Powerco brings gas to the meter; everything from the meter into the house is work for a licensed gasfitter. Central Wellington's gas pipes were upgraded by Powerco over four years to 2021 to add capacity.
The Kāpiti Coast is not in Powerco's listed gas areas, so in Paraparaumu, Waikanae, Raumati and Ōtaki, LPG bottles are the usual option. Some hill streets elsewhere in the region are not reticulated either. Where bottles go matters, because clearances from windows, doors, drains and vents are set by the standards. We plan bottle placement so it is safe, tidy and easy for the delivery driver to swap.
How It Works
Why a certified gasfitter matters
Every gasfitting job in New Zealand needs a gas certificate, and the person doing it must hold a current PGDB licence. You can check a gasfitter on the public register at pgdb.co.nz and ask to see their licence card, which they have to carry. Licences are renewed every year, so last year's card is not enough. WorkSafe's Energy Safety team is the regulator for gas safety.
Using a certified gasfitter protects you three ways: the work is done to the standard, there is a record of it for your insurer and future buyers, and if something is wrong there is an accountable professional and a regulator behind them.
Planning pipework in Wellington houses
A gas line has to carry enough gas for every appliance that might run at the same time. Add a continuous flow water heater and a big cooktop to a pipe sized for an old oven and they will be starved of gas when they run together. We work out the total load, pipe length and supply pressure before we quote, so the system works on day one and has room for what you add later.
Many older houses in suburbs like Ngaio, Brooklyn and Mt Victoria sit on timber piles with a subfloor you can get under, which usually makes running new pipe straightforward. On steep sites the subfloor can be tall at one end and tight at the other, and concrete slab townhouses mean routing through walls or ceilings instead. Because the region sits on active faults, we fit an accessible isolation valve to each appliance, secure pipework properly and show you how to turn the gas off at the meter or bottles after a strong earthquake.
Smelling gas?
If you can smell gas, turn off the supply at the meter or bottles if it is safe to do so, open doors and windows, do not use switches or flames, and leave the house. Then call for help. Our gas leak repairs team traces and fixes leaks at joints, regulators and appliances, 24/7.
What affects the price
The final price depends on the length and route of new pipework, access under floors or through walls, the number of appliances, natural gas or LPG, and any new regulators or bottle stations. Anything beyond a simple connection is quoted in writing first.
Why Choose Cheeky's Plumbers for Gas Fitting
PGDB-licensed certifying gasfitters
Every job is done by a certifying gasfitter registered with the PGDB, and you get a Gas Certificate of Compliance for your records, your insurer and any future buyer.
Pipe sized for the full load
We calculate the total appliance load, pipe length and supply pressure before quoting, so new appliances get the gas they need when everything runs at once.
Ready for the next big shake
Each appliance gets an isolation valve you can reach, and we show you how to shut off gas at the meter or bottles.
LPG placed to the standard
On the Kāpiti Coast and other unreticulated streets, bottle stations go where clearances are met and the driver can swap them easily.
Fixed price before we start
Larger jobs are quoted in writing and the price is agreed before work begins.
Gas Fitting FAQs
Do I need a certified gasfitter in New Zealand?
Yes. Gasfitting is restricted work and must be done by someone authorised by the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board.
Can I get natural gas connected in Wellington?
Often, yes. Powerco runs the network in Wellington, the Hutt and Porirua and says homes near existing pipes can most likely connect for free. Check your address on Powerco's site.
Is there natural gas on the Kāpiti Coast?
Kāpiti is not in Powerco's listed gas areas, so most homes there use LPG bottles. We set up bottle stations to the standard.
How much does gas fitting cost in Wellington?
Larger jobs such as new pipe runs are quoted in writing after a site visit.
Will I get a gas certificate?
Yes. Every gasfitting job we complete comes with the certification required by law.
Can you convert an appliance from LPG to natural gas?
Some appliances can be converted with the maker's kit and some cannot. We check the model before quoting.
