A blocked toilet is a problem nobody can live with for long, least of all in a house or flat with one bathroom. The good news is that most blockages sit in the pan itself or the first metre of pipe behind it, and they can be cleared in one visit without lifting the toilet off the floor.
Cheeky's Plumbers clears blocked toilets in homes, rentals, offices and cafés from Te Aro to Upper Hutt and up the Kāpiti Coast. The first thing we work out is whether the trouble is this one toilet or the drain the whole house shares, because the fix and the price are quite different.
Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.
Blocked Toilets Jobs We Handle Across Wellington
- Blocked toilet
- Toilet unblocking
- Toilet overflowing
- Toy stuck in toilet
- Toilet keeps blocking
- Toilet draining slowly
One toilet or the whole house?
You can usually answer this yourself. If one toilet is slow but the basins, shower and the gully trap outside are behaving, the blockage is in that toilet's trap or its short branch pipe. If the shower gurgles when you flush, a second toilet is slow too, or the gully outside is overflowing, the blockage is further down the shared line, and our blocked drains service is the right call.
Knowing which it is saves time and money. A single toilet is cleared at the pan. A whole house blockage is cleared from an outside access point, often followed by a CCTV drain inspection to see what caused it.
What ends up stuck
Every toilet pan has a tight S-shaped trap cast into the porcelain. Anything bulky that does not break down lodges at the top of that bend and catches paper behind it. The usual culprits:
- Wet wipes, including ones sold as flushable
- A big wad of toilet paper in one flush, common with low-flow pans
- Sanitary products, cotton buds and dental floss
- Toys, toothbrushes and bottle lids from small helpers
- Paper towels and tissues used when the roll runs out
- Hair ties, phone covers and other things that fall in by accident
How It Works
Flush volumes and older Wellington houses
BRANZ's Level guidance notes that older cisterns can use up to 12 litres a flush, while modern dual flush suites use 6/3 or 4.5/3 litres. Swapping an old suite for a new one saves a lot of water, but there is less water to push a heavy load along, so flushing partway through a big load is kinder to the pipes than one large flush.
That matters most in older villas and cottages in suburbs like Newtown, Mt Victoria and Thorndon, where the toilet may still drain into an old clay pipe with mortar joints that roots can work their way into. A new low-flow pan on an old rough drain can block more often than the suite it replaced. If yours started blocking after an upgrade, a camera look at the branch pipe usually explains why.
How we clear a blocked toilet
We start with a toilet auger: a short hand-turned cable with a protective sleeve that feeds round the porcelain bend without marking the glaze. It breaks up paper blockages and can hook out wipes and many solid objects. A plunger rarely shifts a toy; the auger usually does.
If the toilet clears but still drains slowly, we run a camera into the pipe behind the pan. Packed paper, scale or fat in that pipe can be cleared with a small jetting nozzle, and heavy build-up in the main line is a job for our hydro jetting gear.
When the blockage is past your boundary
Occasionally the camera shows the toilet and house drain are clear and the blockage is further out, in the lateral that joins the public sewer. Who pays then depends on where you live. In Wellington City, the council is responsible for any part of the lateral under a public road. In Porirua, the council owns the lateral from your boundary to the main. In Lower Hutt, owners maintain the lateral right through to the main. In Upper Hutt, the council may reimburse reasonable costs on a public lateral if CCTV confirms a defect such as roots or a collapsed pipe caused the blockage.
Our footage and report show where the blockage sits, so you have what you need to raise it with Tiaki Wai, which runs wastewater for these four councils, or to make a claim.
When the pan has to come off, and what it costs
Sometimes an object is jammed so tightly across the trapway that it cannot be pushed through or pulled back. Then we turn off the water, unbolt the pan, lift it and remove the object from the outlet side, refitting the toilet with a new pan connector so it seals properly. If the pan is cracked, the floor under it is soft, or the suite is old enough that replacing it makes more sense, our toilet repairs team can supply and fit a new one on the same visit.
The price rises if the blockage is in the shared drain, if the pan has to be lifted and refitted, if a camera is needed to find a repeat cause, or if access is awkward, such as a wall-hung or back-to-wall pan. We agree the price before we start.
Why Choose Cheeky's Plumbers for Blocked Toilets
Pan-safe tools
We use a sleeved toilet auger, not a bare drain cable, so the porcelain is not scratched or chipped while we work.
The right pipe cleared
We check whether it is one toilet or the whole house before choosing a method, so you are not paying to clear the wrong line.
Camera for repeat blockages
A toilet that blocks every few weeks gets a camera look at the branch pipe and drain, with the footage in your job report.
Answered 24/7
If your only toilet is out of action, a real person answers day or night and books the next available plumber.
Blocked Toilets FAQs
Why does my toilet keep blocking?
Repeat blockages usually mean something is partly stuck in the trap, the branch pipe has a sag or rough joint, or the main drain is restricted by roots. A camera inspection shows which.
My child flushed a toy. Can you get it out?
Usually, yes. Do not flush again. Many toys can be hooked out with a toilet auger; if it is wedged, we lift the pan and remove it from behind.
Should I keep flushing to clear it?
No. Each flush adds water to a bowl that cannot empty, and it can overflow onto the floor. Turn off the isolation valve behind the toilet if it keeps refilling.
Is a blocked toilet an emergency?
If it is the only toilet in the house, or water is overflowing, we treat it as urgent. A slow second toilet can usually wait for a booked visit.
Who pays if the blockage is in the pipe under the street?
It depends on your council. Wellington City covers laterals under public roads and Porirua owns them from the boundary, while Lower Hutt owners maintain them to the main. Our footage shows where the blockage is.
How much does it cost to unblock a toilet in Wellington?
Lifting the pan or clearing a shared drain costs more, and we confirm the price first.
