The kitchen sink works harder than any other fixture in the house. It takes grease, food scraps, hot water and a dishwasher's discharge every day, and the cupboard underneath is where small, slow leaks quietly ruin cabinets and floors.
We do kitchen plumbing across Wellington, the Hutt Valley, Porirua and the Kāpiti Coast, from fixing a dripping trap or fitting a new mixer to plumbing a whole new kitchen. We connect dishwashers and fridge water lines properly, clear blocked wastes, and work alongside kitchen companies so the plumbing lands where the cabinets need it.
Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

Dishwashers and fridges done properly
A dishwasher needs a supply (hot or cold, depending on the manual), an isolation valve you can reach, and a waste connection that cannot siphon dirty water back into the machine. We follow the manufacturer's instructions on drain hose height and use the proper spigot on the sink trap, not an improvised fitting. Our dishwasher installation service covers new machines and swaps.
Fridge water lines need their own isolation valve and, ideally, a filter. Cheap plastic tubing kinked behind a fridge is a common cause of slow leaks under kitchen floors. We use suitable pipe, leave enough slack to pull the fridge out for cleaning, and test for leaks before it goes back in.
How It Works
Leaks you might not notice for months
In most of Wellington City, the Hutt, Upper Hutt and Porirua, homes do not have a water meter, so a dripping fridge line or a weeping dishwasher hose will not show up as a higher bill. Tiaki Wai asks residents to get a registered plumber to fix leaks on their own property, and the first sign is often a swollen cabinet base, a soft spot in the floor or a musty smell. On the Kāpiti Coast homes are metered, so a reading that keeps moving with every tap off is worth checking.
Many older Wellington houses sit on timber piles with a subfloor you can get under, which makes it easier to see whether water has been getting through the floor. If you cannot find the source, our leak detection team can trace it before the damage spreads.
Blocked kitchen sinks
Kitchen blockages are usually fat and food that have set inside the trap or waste pipe. Boiling water and chemical cleaners rarely fix it for long, and harsh chemicals can damage older pipe. We clear the trap and waste with the right tools, and if the blockage is further down the line, it has become a blocked drain and we clear that too. Wiping greasy pans before washing and using a sink strainer prevents most repeat blockages. If your gully trap outside overflows when the sink empties, tell us when you book, because that points to the drain rather than the sink.
Kitchen renovations in Wellington homes
Moving the sink to an island is one of the most popular changes. On a suspended timber floor we can usually run the waste and supply underneath, as long as there is enough fall to the drain. On a concrete slab it may mean cutting the slab or using a pumped waste. Apartments in Te Aro and Thorndon often share waste stacks with the units above and below, and the body corporate may have rules about changes and shut-offs. We sort all of that out at the planning stage, not on install day.
Older kitchens also hide tired pipework. Villas and cottages in suburbs like Newtown and Mt Victoria, and early state houses in places like Miramar and Tītahi Bay, can still have galvanised supply pipe narrowed by corrosion, which shows up as poor flow at the new mixer you just paid for. When the cabinets are out, it costs far less to repipe these sections than to come back after the new kitchen is in.
What kitchen plumbing costs
Simple jobs like a trap repair or a mixer swap sit at the low end. Dishwasher installs, fridge lines, filtered and boiling water units and renovation work depend on what is involved, and we quote those first. If you have bought your own sink, mixer or appliance, we can install it. Hill homes with long steps from the street can take a little longer to set up, and that is built into the quote rather than added on the day.
Why Choose Cheeky's Plumbers for Kitchen Plumbing
Dishwashers plumbed to spec
We follow the maker's drain hose height, loop the hose high under the bench and use the correct waste spigot, so dirty water cannot siphon back.
Leak-tested fridge lines
Suitable pipe, a dedicated isolation valve and enough slack to pull the fridge out, tested before it goes back.
Renovations planned early
We work with your kitchen company on floor type, island waste routes and body corporate rules before install day.
Old pipe flagged while it is open
When the cabinets are out we point out corroded supply pipe or patched wastes, while the fix is cheap.
Fixed price before we start
The price is agreed before work begins.
Kitchen Plumbing FAQs
Can you install my new dishwasher?
Yes. We connect the supply and waste to the manufacturer's instructions, with an isolation valve and a correctly looped drain hose.
How much does a kitchen plumber cost in Wellington?
Larger jobs are quoted before we start.
Why does my kitchen sink keep blocking?
Usually fat and food building up in the trap or waste. We clear it properly and show you how to keep it clear.
Can you move my sink to an island bench?
Usually, yes. It is simpler on a timber floor than a concrete slab, and we check the waste route and fall before you commit.
Can you plumb in a fridge with an ice maker?
Yes. We run a proper water line with an isolation valve and leave slack so the fridge can be moved.
Do you install boiling water taps?
Yes, we do the plumbing for boiling and filtered water units. Some also need a power point from an electrician.
