A blocked drain does not clear itself. Water that sits in the shower tray or creeps up around the gully trap is a sign that something further down the pipe has filled, cracked or shifted. Leave it and the likely next stage is wastewater on the floor, a smell through the house, or a soaked patch of lawn on a section that is already wet from a week of Wellington rain.
Cheeky's Plumbers clears blocked drains in homes, flats and businesses from Island Bay to Upper Hutt and up the coast to Ōtaki. We tell you the price before we touch anything, we find out why it blocked as well as clearing it, and if the line needs a repair the unblock comes off the bill.
Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

Signs it is the drain, not just the plughole
One slow basin is usually hair and soap close to the waste. When several fixtures misbehave together, the problem is in the shared pipe further down. These are the signs worth acting on quickly: If the drain is still flowing but slow or smelly, routine drain cleaning is usually the better booking.
- Water rising in the shower or bath when the toilet is flushed
- Gurgling from the basin or gully trap after the washing machine empties
- The outside gully overflowing, or a ring of debris around the grate
- A sewer smell inside, often worst in the bathroom or laundry
- The toilet bowl filling higher than normal before slowly dropping
- Wet, sunken or unusually green strips of lawn along the drain line
What blocks drains in Wellington homes
Indoors, the usual causes are the same everywhere. Wet wipes and paper towels are the main culprits behind blocked toilets, because they hold together instead of breaking down. In kitchens it is fat and food scraps that set hard once they cool in the pipe.
Outside, tree roots are the big one. Established hillside suburbs such as Karori, Khandallah and Kelburn have mature gardens and bush edges sitting right over old earthenware drains, and roots find those joints within a few years. Ground conditions matter too. On reclaimed and soft ground around Petone, Kilbirnie and Lyall Bay, earthquakes can shift buried pipes and leave a lip where waste catches, and on steep cut and fill sections a slow ground movement can do the same. Rain adds load as well: if a downpipe still runs into the gully trap, a heavy downpour can send more water into the wastewater line than it can carry.
How It Works
How we clear the blockage
We start at the easiest access point, normally the gully trap or an inspection cap, so a toilet is not lifted unless it has to be. For most household blockages an electric drain machine with the right cutting head clears the line in one visit. Where grease or roots have packed the pipe solid, we switch to hydro jetting.
Once water is flowing we test flush every affected fixture and, if the cause is not obvious, run a CCTV drain inspection. A drain that keeps blocking is telling you something. Clearing it again without looking is how people end up paying for the same call-out three times.
What a blocked drain costs
If we find a broken or root-filled pipe and you go ahead with drain repairs, we waive the unblocking charge.
The price moves with access (a drain under a deck, behind a retaining wall or at the bottom of a long flight of steps takes longer), the type of blockage (roots and set fat take more work than a wipe), and whether a camera is needed to find the cause. Either way, you get the price before we start, not a meter running while you watch.
Your pipe or the council's? It depends where you live
Responsibility for the wastewater lateral, the pipe from your house to the public main, is not the same across the region. In Wellington City the council side covers any part of the lateral under a public road, and owners look after the parts on their own property, on neighbouring private land or under a reserve. In Lower Hutt owners maintain the lateral all the way to where it joins the council main. In Porirua owners look after the lateral within their boundary, and the council owns it from the boundary to the main. In Upper Hutt private laterals are the owner's, and on a public lateral the council may reimburse reasonable costs where CCTV confirms a defect such as roots or a collapse.
That is why our camera footage matters. If it shows the blockage is on the public side, we give you the video and point you to Tiaki Wai so you are not paying for their fix. Shared private drains are also common on older cross-leased sites and in flats, and footage makes splitting the cost with neighbours a lot easier.

Blocked Drains FAQs
Is the blockage my responsibility or the council's?
It depends on your council. Wellington City covers the part of the lateral under a public road, Lower Hutt owners maintain theirs to the main, and Porirua owners maintain theirs within the boundary. Our footage shows where the fault sits.
Why does my gully trap overflow when it rains?
Often a downpipe is still running into it, or the drain past it is partly blocked. Roof water should go to stormwater, not wastewater, and we can redirect it.
Can I use drain cleaner from the supermarket?
For a slow basin it can help. On a fully blocked line it usually sits on top of the blockage, and caustic products can damage older pipes. Avoid them before we arrive.
Is a blocked drain an emergency?
If wastewater is coming up inside the house or your only toilet is out of action, yes. Stop running water and call us. A slow shower can usually wait for a booked visit.
Do flushable wipes really cause blockages?
Many of them do. They are made to hold together when wet, so they snag on joints and roots and catch everything else. Bin them instead.
