Signs your spouting needs attention

Spouting problems are easiest to spot during heavy rain. Look for:

• Water pouring over the front edge instead of into the downpipe
• Drips or streaks at joints, corners and end caps
• Spouting pulling away from the fascia after a big blow
• Rust spots or pinholes in older steel spouting
• Damp patches on walls or ceilings below the eaves
• Downpipes disconnected, or discharging onto the ground or a bank

Repair or replace?

Plenty of spouting problems are fixable. Blocked outlets can be cleared, sagging runs re-bracketed to the correct fall, and leaking joints resealed. Where one length is rusted through or cracked, we can replace just that section and match the profile.

Replacement makes more sense when steel spouting is rusting along its whole length, when brittle PVC cracks at every joint, or when the system was never sized for the roof area it drains. Wind matters here too. Brackets need to be close enough together to hold the spouting in a gale as well as carry the weight of water and debris, so on exposed sites we often add brackets rather than just reseal. We offer PVC and pre-painted steel in common profiles and colours. If you are planning rainwater tanks, we size the downpipes to feed them.

How It Works

Flashings and roof penetrations

Flashings seal the gaps where a roof meets walls, chimneys, skylights and pipes. Over time sealant cracks, fixings work loose and older flashings corrode. Wind-driven rain then gets pushed up and under laps that would stay dry in calmer weather. Leaks around flues, vent pipes and old chimney stacks are especially common.

We inspect from the roof, photograph what we find and show you before any work starts. Typical fixes include new pipe boots, re-dressed or replaced flashings and resealed penetrations, using products suited to your roofing material and your exposure. If water is showing up inside and the source is not obvious from the roof, our leak detection gear helps trace it.

What affects the cost

The price depends on:

• Height and access, from single-storey eaves to houses perched above a steep drop
• Roof pitch and whether scaffolding or edge protection is needed
• Length of spouting to repair or replace, and the material chosen
• Number of downpipes and stormwater connections involved
• Flashing work, especially around chimneys and skylights
• Whether materials have to be carried up long flights of steps

Wellington conditions that are hard on spouting

NIWA's long-term normals put Wellington Airport at about 957 mm of rain a year, Lower Hutt at about 1,206 mm and the Wainuiomata reservoir at about 1,800 mm, with winter the wettest season. More rain means more water through the same outlets, so spouting in Wainuiomata and Stokes Valley has to work harder than on the flat at Kilbirnie. Bush-clad sections in Eastbourne, Karori and Ngaio also fill outlets with leaves quickly.

Salt is the other enemy. Under NZS 3604, land within 500 m of the sea, including harbours, falls in exposure Zone D, so steel spouting and fixings in places like Lyall Bay, Island Bay, Seatoun and along the Petone foreshore can corrode much faster than inland. Check your zone on BRANZ Maps and wash down sheltered metal regularly.

Finally, where the water goes matters on a hillside. Tiaki Wai says roof downpipes must connect to the stormwater system, not wastewater, and GeoNet linked many of the 2022 Wellington slips to saturated ground. A downpipe dumping onto a bank is asking for trouble, so we check every downpipe runs into your stormwater system.
