When a household runs on a pump, the pump is the water supply. If it stops, there is no shower, no toilet flush and no water for the garden or stock. Before it stops, it usually tells you: short bursts of running, a new noise, or pressure that rises and falls while you are in the shower.
We diagnose the pump, pressure switch, controller and pressure tank together, because the fault is often not where it first appears. Then we repair what can be repaired and replace what cannot, with a fixed price agreed before any work starts. We cover homes and lifestyle blocks across Wellington City, the Hutt Valley, Porirua and the Kāpiti Coast.
Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

Water Pumps Jobs We Handle Across Wellington
- Pressure pump installation
- Tank pump replacement
- Bore pump repairs
- Pump cycling on and off
- Noisy pumps
- Variable speed pumps
Signs your pump needs attention
Catch these early and a repair is often cheap. Leave them and the motor usually pays the price: If you are on town supply and the flow is weak, start with our low water pressure page instead.
- The pump switches on and off rapidly, or runs when no taps are open
- Pressure surges and drops while a tap is running
- Loud humming, grinding or vibration
- The pump runs but delivers little or no water
- The circuit or the pump's own overload keeps tripping
- Water leaking from the pump body or fittings
Types of pumps we work on
Different supplies need different pumps, from the house supply to irrigation systems and stormwater. We work on:
- Pressure booster pumps for town supply where pressure is genuinely low
- Tank pumps for rainwater supply to the house, toilets, laundry or garden
- Submersible and jet bore pumps for groundwater supply on rural blocks
- Sump and stormwater pumps for basements, garages and low-lying sections
- Wastewater pump stations, where a licensed drainlayer is also involved
How It Works
Why pumps cycle and fail early
Rapid cycling is the most common pump fault, and it is hard on motors. The usual causes are a pressure tank that has lost its air charge or has a ruptured bladder, a faulty pressure switch, or a hidden leak somewhere in the system that lets the pressure bleed away.
Running dry is the other big killer. A rainwater tank that empties in a dry spell, a blocked foot valve or a failed float switch can leave the pump spinning with no water to cool it. Modern controllers with dry-run protection shut the pump down before it is damaged, and we recommend them on any tank or bore supply.
What affects the cost
The total depends on:
- Repair versus replacement, and the pump brand and size
- Whether the pressure tank, switch or controller also needs replacing
- Access: a pump shed beside the house versus a bore across a paddock or a tank at the bottom of a steep bank
- Lifting gear for deep submersible bore pumps
- Electrical work if the supply or isolating switch needs upgrading
Rural and lifestyle pump jobs around the region
On the market gardens and lifestyle blocks around Ōtaki, and on the rural edges of Upper Hutt, pumps often supply the house, sheds and troughs over long runs of pipe. When one fails, we prioritise getting water back on the same day, even if that means fitting a temporary pump while a replacement is sourced.
Tank-fed garden systems need a little more thought here than elsewhere. Water restrictions in the Tiaki Wai area run from Level 1 (sprinklers on alternate days only) to Level 4, and Level 1 applies all year in Upper Hutt, so a well set up tank pump can keep a garden watered without leaning on the town supply. Check the current level with Tiaki Wai before running sprinklers off the mains.
Booster and sump pumps in town
In town, a booster pump can help where the incoming supply is genuinely low, such as on some elevated sections. But weak pressure is often caused by an undersized or corroded supply pipe, a part-closed toby or a failing valve instead. We test at the toby and at the taps first, and we will tell you honestly when the better fix is a water main repair rather than adding a pump.
On low-lying ground, such as parts of Petone and the Hutt valley floor, a sump pump in a basement or garage can be the difference between a damp floor and a flood in heavy rain. A stormwater sump pump must discharge to the stormwater system, not the sewer, because sending it to wastewater overloads the network. We set the discharge up correctly and fit a high-level alarm where it is worth having.
Why Choose Cheeky's Plumbers for Water Pumps
Whole system diagnosed
We test the pump, pressure switch, controller and pressure tank together, because a cycling pump is often a tank or switch fault rather than the motor.
Dry-run protection fitted
On tank and bore supplies we recommend controllers with dry-run protection, which shut the pump down before it is damaged.
Water back the same day
On rural supplies we aim to get water back on the same day, fitting a temporary pump if a replacement has to be sourced.
Honest about pipe versus pump
If weak town pressure is really an undersized or corroded supply pipe, we say so rather than selling you a booster.
Sumps discharged correctly
Stormwater sump pumps are connected to stormwater, never the sewer, so your fix does not create a problem for the network or the neighbours.
Water Pumps FAQs
Why does my pump keep turning on and off?
Usually the pressure tank has lost its air charge, the pressure switch is faulty, or there is a leak in the system. All three are fixable.
Can you replace my pump the same day?
Often, for common pressure and tank pumps. If a specific model is needed, we can fit a temporary pump so you are not left without water.
Do you service bore pumps?
Yes, including submersible pumps, using the right lifting equipment for deep bores.
Will a pump fix low town water pressure?
Sometimes, if the supply is genuinely low. If the problem is a narrow or corroded pipe, replacing the pipe is usually the better fix. We test before recommending either.
Can my sump pump drain into the gully trap?
No. A stormwater sump pump must discharge to stormwater. Sending it into the sewer overloads the wastewater network.
Are constant pressure pumps worth it?
For homes relying on tank or bore water, the steadier pressure and quieter running are usually worth it. For occasional garden use, a standard pump with a good controller is fine.
