Wastewater normally runs downhill to the public sewer. On a lot of Wellington sections it cannot. Houses built below the street on the downhill side of a road, basement flats cut into a slope, and extensions sitting lower than the original drain all rely on a pump to lift wastewater up to the main. When that pump stops, the tank fills fast.
We look after the whole system: the tank, pump, floats, non-return valve, rising main, alarm and control box. When the alarm sounds we find out why, fix it, and leave you with a service record so you know where things stand.
Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

Signs your pump station needs attention
Most pump stations give some warning before they fail. Call us if you notice:
- The high-level alarm light or buzzer going off
- The pump running constantly, or cycling on and off every few minutes
- Humming with no water moving, or a grinding noise
- A sewage smell around the lid or vent
- Toilets and showers draining slowly with no blockage found
- The circuit breaker tripping when the pump starts
What usually goes wrong
Float switches are the most common failure. They tell the pump when to start and stop, and once they stick, tangle or get coated in fat, the pump either never starts or never stops. Next is rag build-up: wet wipes, sanitary products and paper towels wrap around the impeller and stall the motor.
Other common faults are non-return valves that let the rising main drain back into the tank, corroded cables and control boxes, and pumps that have simply reached the end of their life. A pump that runs far more than it should after rain can point to stormwater getting into the tank. Tiaki Wai is clear that roof water belongs in the stormwater system, not wastewater, so if we find a downpipe or yard drain feeding the tank we will show you and quote to redirect it to your stormwater drains.
How It Works
Who is responsible for a private pump station
Tiaki Wai's guidance is that faults in public pipes are fixed through the council renewals programme, while faults in private drains are the owner's job, and the exact line depends on which council you are in. A pump station that serves only your house sits on the private side, so servicing and repairs are yours to arrange. Where a pump serves several units, the cost may be shared under a body corporate or easement arrangement, so check your title or rules.
On the Kāpiti Coast, wastewater is run by Kāpiti Coast District Council rather than Tiaki Wai, so questions about the public side go to the council. If you are planning a subdivision, a minor dwelling or an extension below the level of your existing drain, talk to us early. Our drainlaying team can tell you whether gravity is possible or a pump will be needed, before the plans are fixed.
Sump pumps for stormwater and groundwater
Not every pump handles sewage. Sump pumps lift stormwater and groundwater out of basements, sunken courtyards, retaining wall drains and garages that sit below the driveway. They suit Wellington's cut-and-fill hillside sections in suburbs like Brooklyn, Hataitai, Ngaio and Wainuiomata, where water collects at the low point of the build.
A stormwater sump pump must discharge to the stormwater system, never to a gully trap or the sewer. GeoNet linked many of Wellington's 2022 slips to saturated ground, so where a pump outlet goes on a sloping site matters as much as the pump itself. We size sump pumps for the catchment, fit a float and, where it protects a living space, a high-level alarm.
Servicing, repair and replacement
A service covers lifting and hosing the pump, clearing rag from the impeller, testing floats and the alarm, checking the non-return and isolation valves, inspecting cables and the control panel, and checking the tank for cracks and fat build-up. Yearly servicing suits most homes; flats, home businesses and sites with a history of blockages may need it more often.
When a pump is beyond repair we replace it like for like, or upgrade to a better-suited pump or a dual-pump arrangement where the load justifies it. If the tank needs pumping out before we can work, we organise that.
Pump station cost
Every pump station is different, so we give a free quote. The price depends on the type of pump (sewage, grinder or stormwater sump), whether the tank needs emptying first, how easy the lid is to reach on a steep or tight section, the condition of the floats, valves and controls, and whether a repair or a full replacement makes more sense. You get a fixed price before work starts.
Why Choose Cheeky's Plumbers for Wastewater Pump Stations
Drainlayers and plumbers together
Pump stations sit between plumbing, drainage and electrics. Our registered drainlayers handle the tank, rising main and connections, so one team owns the whole fix.
Answered 24/7 when the alarm sounds
A real person answers day and night and talks you through cutting water use while a technician is on the way.
Find the cause, not just the clog
We check what is reaching the tank, from wipes to stormwater, and run a drain camera on the incoming line when the pump is being overworked.
Service records you can keep
Each visit comes with photos and notes on the pump, floats and tank, useful for body corporates, landlords and future buyers.
Wastewater Pump Stations FAQs
What should I do when my pump station alarm goes off?
Stop using water straight away: no showers, laundry, dishwasher or flushing. Check the pump's circuit breaker, then call us. The tank has some spare room above the alarm level, but not much.
Is the council or Tiaki Wai responsible for my pump?
Usually not. A pump station that serves only your property is part of your private drainage. If you are unsure who owns a pump, check your property file or ask Tiaki Wai, or Kāpiti Coast District Council on the Kāpiti Coast.
How often should a private pump station be serviced?
Once a year suits most homes. Heavy use, a history of rag build-up or a commercial kitchen calls for more frequent servicing.
What happens to my pump station in a power cut?
The pump stops, so keep water use to a minimum until power is back. If the outage is long and the tank is near full, call us about having it pumped out.
What is the difference between a sump pump and a sewage pump?
A sump pump moves stormwater or groundwater to the stormwater system. A sewage or grinder pump moves wastewater to the sewer. They are not interchangeable and must not be cross-connected.
Can I flush wipes with a pump station?
No. Wipes and sanitary products wrap around the impeller and are one of the main reasons private pumps fail early.
