A gas fire lights with a button and warms a living room in minutes, with no firewood to stack and no ash to clear. When it is installed and maintained properly, it is clean and safe. When a flue is blocked or a heater has been neglected for years, it can put carbon monoxide into the house, which is why servicing matters as much as the install.
We service and repair gas fireplaces and heaters, install inbuilt and freestanding flued fires, and convert old open fireplaces to gas, from Hataitai and Khandallah to Petone, Paremata and Raumati. Our certifying gasfitters handle the gas supply, flue, commissioning and paperwork, whether you are on Powerco's natural gas network or LPG bottles.
Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

What a gas fire service covers
Gas fires and heaters need periodic servicing to stay safe and efficient. A typical service includes cleaning the burner and pilot assembly, checking ignition and the flame supervision device, inspecting the flue and terminal for blockages such as birds' nests, checking the glass seal on inbuilt fires, measuring gas pressure and testing for leaks.
Book in straight away if you notice soot on the glass or surrounds, a lazy yellow flame, a pilot that will not stay lit, or a smell when the fire is running. Turn the fire off until it has been checked. If you smell gas with the fire off, leave the room, turn the gas off at the meter or bottle and call us for gas leak repairs.
Types of gas heating we install
The right choice depends on the room and how you use it. If you want heat through the whole house, gas boilers and hydronic heating are worth a look as well.
- Inbuilt flued gas fires set into a wall or cavity
- Gas inserts that sit in an existing open fireplace with a liner up the chimney
- Freestanding flued gas fires with a visible flue
- Flued wall heaters for bedrooms and smaller living spaces
- Outdoor gas heaters for sheltered decks and covered patios
How It Works
Flued versus unflued heaters
A flued appliance sends its combustion products outside. An unflued appliance, such as a portable LPG cabinet heater, releases them into the room. WorkSafe advises against using unflued gas appliances in small rooms, bedrooms or bathrooms, and says they should only be used in well ventilated areas. Energywise recommends keeping a window open while one is running.
Unflued heaters also put a lot of moisture into the air. Winter is Wellington's wettest season, and the last thing a damp villa or a closed-up apartment needs is more water vapour on the windows. For a permanent heat source we install flued appliances only.
Natural gas or LPG
Powerco's natural gas network runs through Wellington City, the Hutt Valley and Porirua, and Powerco says homes close to existing pipes can most likely connect for free. Its online checker shows whether your street is covered.
Kāpiti is not in Powerco's listed network areas, so gas fires in Paraparaumu, Waikanae and Ōtaki usually run on LPG. Many gas fires come in an LPG version, and we size the bottle setup and regulator to suit the fire and any other gas appliances in the house.
Wind, flues and older chimneys
Wellington Airport records gusts over 63 km/h on about 166 days a year, according to NIWA's climate normals. A flue terminal in the wrong spot on an exposed hillside can struggle to vent cleanly, so we follow the manufacturer's terminal requirements closely and look at how the wind wraps around your house before choosing the route.
Older villas and bungalows, like many in Ngaio and Island Bay, were built in an era of open fireplaces. Where the chimney is still standing, an open fire tends to lose more heat than it gives, and a gas insert with a flue liner can turn it into useful heat. We check the chimney's condition first. If the chimney is in poor shape, a freestanding or inbuilt fire with its own flue is often the better path.
What affects the cost
Servicing and simple repairs sit at the lower end. Installation costs depend on the appliance, the length and route of the flue, whether a chimney needs a liner, building work around an inbuilt fire, and how far the gas supply has to run from the meter or bottles.
Some flue installations need building consent, and we tell you upfront if yours does. A registered gasfitter must install the heater, and every installation is certified. For broader gas fitting work in the same visit, such as a new bayonet point or a hob, we quote it all together.

Gas Fires FAQs
How often should a gas fire be serviced?
A check every year or two is sensible, and straight away if you see soot, a yellow flame or a pilot that will not stay lit.
Are unflued gas heaters safe?
WorkSafe says unflued gas appliances should not be used in small rooms, bedrooms or bathrooms, and only in well ventilated spaces. For permanent heating we recommend flued appliances.
Can you convert my open fireplace to gas?
Often, yes, using a gas insert and a flue liner in the existing chimney. We check the chimney's condition first.
Can I have a gas fire on the Kāpiti Coast?
Yes, on LPG. Kāpiti is not in Powerco's listed natural gas areas, so most fires there run from bottles, and many models come in an LPG version.
How much does gas fire work cost in Wellington?
Full installations depend on the appliance and flue, and we quote in writing after a site visit.
Do I need a carbon monoxide alarm with a gas fire?
We recommend one in any home with indoor gas appliances as an extra layer of safety.
