A gas hob is one of the easiest appliances to buy and one of the easiest to install badly. The wrong gas type, unset burner pressure or a cupboard too close to the flame can mean poor cooking at best and a safety risk at worst. Connecting it is gasfitting, which in New Zealand must be done by an authorised gasfitter and certified.

Our certifying gasfitters install hobs, cooktops, wall ovens and freestanding cookers across Wellington, the Hutt Valley, Porirua and the Kāpiti Coast. We check the supply, connect and test the appliance, and leave you with a gas certificate.

Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

Getting the details right

Most problems with gas cooking trace back to installation shortcuts. Every appliance is built for a specific gas type and pressure, so an LPG hob on natural gas, or the reverse, will burn badly or not at all. Burner pressure has to be checked and set. Clearances to rangehoods, overhead cupboards and side walls must follow the manufacturer's instructions and the gas standards, or heat will damage the cabinetry. And the connection must be reachable so the appliance can be isolated for servicing.

We check all of this, then light every burner, check flame quality, test the flame failure devices that shut off the gas if a flame goes out, and leak test the connection. If you ever smell gas near an existing cooker, turn it off at the isolation valve, open the windows and call us for gas leak repairs.

Natural gas or LPG: what is available where you live

Powerco owns the reticulated natural gas network in Wellington, the Hutt Valley and Porirua. It says homes close to existing gas pipes can most likely connect for free, and it has an address checker on its website. A licensed gasfitter then does all the work inside the property. Powerco also finished a four-year upgrade of central Wellington's gas pipes in 2021 to add capacity.

Powerco's listed areas do not include the Kāpiti Coast, so in Paraparaumu, Raumati, Waikanae and Ōtaki plan on LPG unless the address checker says otherwise. On LPG we check that the bottles, regulator and pipe can supply a large cooker alongside your other gas appliances, and that the bottle position is easy to reach for exchanges. If you need a new gas line run to the kitchen, our gas fitting team can quote it with the appliance.

Ventilation, rangehoods and earthquake safety

Burning gas produces combustion products, so extraction matters more over a gas hob than over induction. A rangehood that vents outside does a better job than one that recirculates. If you are renovating, plan the rangehood duct, the kitchen plumbing and the gas point at the same time. We advise on the gas side and the clearances, and work with your electrician or kitchen installer on the rest.

Wellington sits in a high seismic risk area, so we pay attention to what happens to a cooker when the house shakes. Every freestanding cooker gets an anti-tilt bracket, and the connection is made so the appliance can move a little without straining the gas fitting.

Price guide and Wellington kitchens

A straight swap on an existing gas point sits at the lower end. New pipe, a moved gas point, a bigger supply for a high-output cooker or an LPG conversion kit cost more, and we quote those in writing first. Faulty burners, igniters and oven thermostats on an existing appliance are covered under gas appliance repairs.

In older villas and cottages on timber piles, the gas pipe usually comes up through the floor, so moving the point is fairly simple from the subfloor. On concrete slabs, moving it can mean chasing a wall or running pipe through the ceiling. If you live in an apartment building in Te Aro or Thorndon, check the body corporate rules on gas before you buy a gas cooker.

Why Choose Cheeky's Plumbers for Gas Cooktops & Ovens

Certified on the day

Our authorised gasfitters test the installation and issue your gas certificate before they leave.

Set up for your gas type

Natural gas or LPG, we confirm the appliance is set for your supply and adjust burner pressure to the maker's figures.

Anti-tilt bracket fitted

Every freestanding cooker is secured against tipping, which matters in a busy kitchen and in an earthquake.

Gas point placed for your cabinetry

On renovations we set the gas point where the cabinetmaker and appliance need it, so nothing has to be cut later.

Gas Cooktops & Ovens FAQs

Can I install a gas hob myself?

No. Connecting a gas appliance is gasfitting and must be done by an authorised gasfitter, with a gas certificate issued for the work.

How much does it cost to install a gas hob in Wellington?

Moving the gas point or running new pipe costs more and is quoted first.

Is natural gas available on the Kāpiti Coast?

Powerco's listed network areas do not include Kāpiti, so most homes there use LPG. Check Powerco's address checker for your property to be sure.

Can my LPG hob be converted to natural gas?

Some can, using the manufacturer's conversion kit. We check the model first and only convert where the maker allows it.

Do I need a rangehood over a gas hob?

A rangehood that vents outside is strongly recommended to remove combustion products and cooking fumes. Follow the clearances in the manufacturer's instructions.

Can you swap my electric cooktop for gas?

Yes, if a gas supply is available or can be run to the kitchen. We quote the gas line and the connection together.
