The Kāpiti Coast runs north along the coastal plain from Raumati and Paraparaumu, two of the fastest growing urban areas in the country, to Waikanae and the town of Ōtaki. Housing ranges from seaside streets and commuter subdivisions to retirement homes, beach houses and lifestyle blocks.

On the coast the water network belongs to the district council, not Tiaki Wai, and every property is metered, so a hidden leak turns into a higher bill. That makes leak detection a big share of the work. Powerco's gas network does not list Kāpiti, so gas hot water and cooktops usually run on LPG, and some homes need extra backflow protection for irrigation or a second water source.

Homes in the Kāpiti Coast

Commuter subdivisions spreading out from the first settlement by the railway crossing in Paraparaumu; seaside homes on streets laid out as a resort from 1908 in Raumati Beach and Raumati South; family and retirement homes in Waikanae and Waikanae Beach; and town houses, a mix of year-round and holiday houses at Ōtaki Beach, and lifestyle blocks among the market gardens around Ōtaki.

Common Plumbing Problems in the Kāpiti Coast

Blocked Drains

Sand carried in from the beach, decks and outdoor showers settles in coastal drains and slowly chokes them. Near the shore we check the gully trap first, because sand is often the whole story. Blocked Drains across Wellington.

Local Conditions in the Kāpiti Coast

The district council keeps water, wastewater and stormwater in its own hands and chose in May 2025 to stay out of Tiaki Wai. Each property pays a fixed charge plus a charge per cubic metre, and the meter usually sits with the toby in a blue-lidded box outside the property. Paraparaumu, Raumati and Waikanae share water from the Waikanae River, topped up from a borefield in dry summers, while Ōtaki is supplied from council bores. The plain is mostly sand dunes with peat swamps between them, and a 1993 Greater Wellington study found many Kāpiti soils easily liquefiable, so buried pipes on soft ground can move. Paraparaumu gets gusts over 63 km/h on 77 days a year, far fewer than Wellington Airport.

Plumber Kāpiti Coast FAQs

How do I tell if I have a leak on a Kāpiti water meter?

Turn off every tap and appliance and read the meter, then read it again an hour or two later without using any water. If the number has moved, water is escaping somewhere, and we can trace it with leak detection gear before it adds to your bill.

Can I get natural gas in Paraparaumu or Waikanae?

Kāpiti is not on Powerco's list of natural gas areas, so gas appliances on the coast mostly run on LPG bottles. You can check your address with Powerco, and we install and service LPG hot water, cooktops and fires.

Does my Kāpiti home need a backflow device?

The council requires some form of backflow prevention on every connection. The type depends on the risk, and homes with two water sources, a fire sprinkler or an irrigation meter may need a higher level of protection.

Who do I call about a water fault in the street in Raumati or Ōtaki?

Faults in the public network go to Kāpiti Coast District Council, because Tiaki Wai does not cover the coast. Plumbing on your own property, such as leaking pipes, taps and toilets, is yours to fix, and we can find and repair it.
