When a pipe lets go, the clock starts. A split line in the ceiling, a flexi hose that has finally given up under the vanity or a joint weeping under the floor can soak framing, insulation and carpet in minutes. The first move is always the same: turn the water off at the toby, then call an emergency plumber.
Our licensed plumbers cover the whole region, from Te Aro and Karori to Lower Hutt, Porirua and the Kāpiti Coast. We make the area safe, replace the failed section with the right pipe, test it under pressure, and tell you honestly whether this was a one-off or the first sign that the rest of the system is tired.
Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

Why pipes burst in Wellington homes
Frozen pipes get the headlines overseas, but that is not what we usually find here. Wellington bursts come down to the age of the pipe, the pressure it carries and the way the ground and the house move around it. The common causes are:
- Galvanised steel supply pipe in older villas and cottages rusting through from the inside
- Grey polybutylene pipe and its fittings ageing in houses from the 1970s and 1980s
- Braided flexi hoses under sinks, basins and toilets corroding until the braid splits
- High mains pressure with no pressure limiting valve, stressing joints and fittings
- Movement on hillside sections, after slips or after a decent earthquake, loading buried pipe
- A nail or screw driven through a pipe during a renovation
How we repair a burst pipe
We start by confirming the water is isolated and that no wiring, light fittings or power points are wet. Then we cut out the damaged length and replace it with pipe that suits your system, whether that is copper, PEX or a proper transition fitting between old and new material.
Before the water goes back on, the repair is pressure tested and we look along the run on both sides. If the pipe beyond the split is thin, pitted or brittle, we show you on the spot. Some owners want the single repair today. Others choose repiping the whole run while the floor, wall or ceiling is already open, which costs less than coming back later.
How It Works
Under the house, in the ceiling or under the drive
Many older Wellington houses stand on timber piles with a subfloor you can crawl into, which makes most underfloor bursts quick to reach. Slab floors, upstairs bathrooms in townhouses and apartments in Te Aro or Thorndon take more planning, because the pipe may be in concrete, behind tiles or shared with the units around you.
A burst between the toby and the house is a different job again. Under the Tiaki Wai network rules, the pipe on your side of the toby is the owner's responsibility, so a leak under the lawn or a steep driveway is ours to fix and our water main repairs cover it. A leak on the street side of the toby, or water bubbling up in the berm, should be reported to Tiaki Wai on 0800 842 549. On the Kāpiti Coast, report it to Kāpiti Coast District Council instead.
Insurance and evidence
Many house policies cover sudden water damage from a burst, although cover for the failed pipe itself, and the excess you pay, varies between insurers. What an assessor wants is a clear record of what failed, when, and what it damaged.
We give you dated photos of the failure, the repair and the wet area, plus a short written description of the cause. If you have already had more than one burst on old polybutylene or galvanised pipe, ask your insurer how they view repeat failures and talk to us about replacing the pipe rather than patching it again.
What affects the price
The final price depends on:
- Where the pipe is: in a crawl space, a ceiling, behind tiles or in a concrete slab
- The pipe material and size, and whether an adaptor to newer pipe is needed
- Access on steep sections with long flights of steps from the street
- Whether the call-out is after hours or on a public holiday
- How much pipe needs replacing once we can see its condition
- Making good afterwards, such as refitting a vanity or a ceiling panel
Drying out and stopping the next one
Wet framing, batts and underlay need to dry properly or they grow mould, and in a Wellington winter that can take a while. If a lot of water has gone into the ceiling or walls, your insurer may send a drying company with dehumidifiers. Keep the room ventilated in the meantime.
Hidden leaks are easy to miss here. Most homes in Wellington City, the Hutt and Porirua are not on a water meter, so a slow leak under the floor will not show up as a high bill. Damp smells, or the sound of running water with every tap turned off are the early warnings, and our leak detection gear can find the source without lifting half the house. Kāpiti homes are metered, so a jump in the reading is a useful clue there.
To lower the odds of a repeat, we can fit a pressure limiting valve where mains pressure is high, swap old flexi hoses for new rated ones, and make sure every fixture has its own isolation valve.

Burst Pipes FAQs
What should I do first when a pipe bursts?
Turn the water off at the toby, switch off power to any wet area at the switchboard, and call a plumber. Then move valuables out of the way and take photos.
Who fixes a leak between the toby and my house in Wellington?
The property owner. The pipe on your side of the toby is yours, so a licensed plumber repairs it. Leaks on the street side go to Tiaki Wai on 0800 842 549, or to Kāpiti Coast District Council on the Kāpiti Coast.
Will my insurance cover a burst pipe?
Most policies cover sudden water damage. Whether the pipe repair itself is covered depends on your policy. We supply photos and a written report to support the claim.
Why would my pipe burst when it is not freezing?
In Wellington, bursts are usually down to old galvanised or polybutylene pipe, worn flexi hoses, high pressure, or ground and house movement rather than frost.
Can you repair just the broken section?
Yes, in most cases. If the pipe around it is in poor shape, we show you and explain whether replacing more of it makes sense.
How long does a burst pipe repair take?
Most repairs under a suspended floor or in an open ceiling are done in one visit. Pipes in a slab or behind tiled walls take longer because of access.
