On a flat lawn, digging up a broken drain is messy but simple. On a Wellington hillside section the same drain might run under concrete steps, a timber retaining wall, a car deck or a neighbour's garden, and the cost of digging and putting everything back can dwarf the cost of the pipe itself.
No-dig relining repairs the drain from the inside. A resin-soaked liner is fed into the old pipe and cured hard, forming a new, jointless pipe within the old one. Access is usually through an existing inspection point or gully trap, so the ground above stays where it is.
Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

When relining makes sense
Relining is a good fit when the pipe still holds roughly the right shape but is leaking or letting roots in. Typical cases include:
- Earthenware drains with roots coming through several joints
- Cracked pipe under driveways, paths, decks or the house
- Drains beneath retaining walls, steps or steep banks that are risky to excavate
- Lines that cross shared or neighbouring property
- Older villas and cottages where disturbance needs to be kept down
- Drains that need jetting every year just to stay open
When relining is the wrong answer
A liner takes the shape of the pipe it sits in. If the old pipe has sagged and holds water, the liner will hold water too. If a section has fully collapsed or pulled apart, there is nothing for the liner to follow. In those cases a dig-and-replace repair, or pipe bursting, is the right call, and we will tell you so rather than sell you a liner that will not fix the problem.
Relining also narrows the internal diameter slightly. On standard domestic lines that rarely matters, but we check it on long or low-fall runs.
How It Works
How the relining process works
We clear the line first, usually with a hydro jetter, because the liner needs a clean surface to bond to. Roots are cut back flush with the pipe wall. A camera inspection then measures the exact length and diameter of the section to be lined.
The liner is cut to length, saturated with resin and inserted into the pipe, either by turning it inside out under air pressure (inversion) or by pulling it into place and inflating a bladder inside it. The resin is then cured with heat, ambient curing or UV light, depending on the system. Branch connections are reopened from inside with a cutting tool, and a second camera run confirms the result. You get the before and after footage.
Cost of pipe relining in Wellington
Relining is quoted for free after a camera inspection. The price depends on the length of the section, the pipe diameter, how many branch connections need reopening, how much root and debris clearing is needed first, and how easy it is to reach the access point.
Per metre, relining can cost more than open trenching through a soft lawn. The saving comes from what you do not have to pay for: breaking and relaying concrete, propping or rebuilding a retaining wall, lifting a deck, carting spoil up steps, or relandscaping a bank. We price both options when both are realistic, so you compare the total cost and not just the pipe.
Relining in Wellington conditions
Wellington's ground does not sit still. The 1993 Hutt Valley liquefaction study placed Petone, Seaview and Gracefield among areas with liquefaction potential, and Wellington City's District Plan includes a liquefaction hazard overlay built from GNS data. Pipes on soft ground can shift and crack joints in a strong earthquake, so after a big shake it is worth a camera check. A jointless liner removes the weak points along the lined section, though it cannot fix a pipe that has dropped out of line.
Who pays can also depend on where you live. Tiaki Wai notes that in Upper Hutt the council may reimburse reasonable costs on a public lateral if CCTV confirms a defect such as roots or a collapsed pipe, while in Lower Hutt owners look after the lateral right to the council main. Our camera footage gives you the evidence either way. Relining on private drains is carried out by authorised drainlayers, and we confirm whether your job needs a building consent before work starts.
Why Choose Cheeky's Plumbers for Pipe Relining
Camera first, footage after
Every relining job starts with a camera inspection and ends with a second camera run, and you keep the before and after footage.
Honest about when not to line
If the pipe has sagged, collapsed or pulled apart, a liner will not fix it, so we quote a dig-and-replace repair or pipe bursting instead.
Both options priced
Where trenching is realistic we price it alongside relining, including concrete, retaining walls, decks and landscaping, so you compare the full cost.
Realistic design life
We quote conservative design life figures rather than marketing numbers, and only line pipes the camera shows are sound enough.
Drainlayers and consent handled
Relining on private drains is done by authorised drainlayers, and we confirm whether consent is needed and supply the paperwork for your council.
Pipe Relining FAQs
What is no-dig pipe relining?
It is a way of repairing a drain by installing a resin-soaked liner inside the existing pipe and curing it hard, creating a new jointless pipe without digging a trench.
How long does a relined pipe last?
Industry sources commonly give cured-in-place pipe a design life of around 50 years. Some manufacturers claim more, but we stick to the conservative figure.
How much does pipe relining cost in Wellington?
It depends on length, diameter, access and the number of branch connections. We quote for free after a camera inspection, and compare it with digging where both are realistic.
Can relining fix a collapsed drain?
Not usually. A liner needs the old pipe to hold its shape. Collapsed or badly sagging sections normally need to be dug up and replaced.
Will roots grow through a relined pipe?
The liner has no joints for roots to enter along the lined section, which is why relining is a common fix for root-affected earthenware drains.
Should I get my drains checked after an earthquake?
If you notice slow drains, smells or new wet patches after a strong earthquake, yes. A camera inspection shows whether joints have cracked or shifted and whether relining or replacement suits.
