Most homes in the Wellington region drain to a council sewer, but not all of them. Lifestyle blocks, farm houses and some properties on the rural edge of the Hutt Valley, Porirua and the Kāpiti Coast treat their own wastewater with a septic tank and a soakage field. Looked after, a septic system just works. Ignored, it shows up as slow drains, smells across the lawn and, eventually, a field that has to be dug up and replaced.

We look after the plumbing side of on-site systems: the drain from the house to the tank, the tank itself, its baffles, lids and outlet filter, and the distribution lines out to the field. For pump-outs we work with licensed suction truck operators, so you deal with one team and get one report.

Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

  • Council septic compliance

Signs your septic system needs attention

Septic trouble almost always starts small. Caught early, the fix is often a clean-out or a pipe repair rather than a new field. Watch for:

  • Every drain in the house running slowly, not just one
  • Toilets gurgling when the washing machine empties
  • A sewage smell near the tank, the vent or the field
  • Grass over the soakage area that is greener, lusher or soggier than the rest
  • Water pooling around the tank lid after rain
  • An alarm on an aerated treatment system

What a septic service includes

A proper service is more than emptying the tank. We lift the lids, measure the sludge and scum layers, inspect the inlet and outlet baffles, clean or replace the outlet filter, and run water through the house drains to check everything reaches the tank freely.

If the tank needs pumping, we book the suction truck and stay on site to inspect the empty tank for cracks, root intrusion and damaged fittings while it is open. You get a written report with photos, which is useful for your records and when you sell. If the drain from the house keeps blocking, we run a camera through it before anyone starts digging. Our CCTV drain inspection service shows exactly where roots or ground movement have got in.

Wet ground, hills and soakage fields

A soakage field relies on the ground around it to take water away. Wellington's weather tests that. NIWA's climate normals show much of the region gets 1,000 to 1,200 mm of rain a year and winter is the wettest season. Places on the Kāpiti coastal plain sit on old sand dunes with peat swamps in the low ground between them, and parts of the Hutt Valley floor are old river flood plain. When the ground is saturated, a field that copes in summer can struggle in July, and a tank lid that lets in surface water fills the system faster still.

On hill properties the problem is different. Effluent may need to be pumped up to a field, and a failed pump or float switch is a common call-out. We service those wastewater pump stations as well. On steep ground we also check that the field and its pipes are not discharging onto a bank, because water soaking into a slope is one of the things that can set off a slip.

Common septic repairs

Most septic work comes down to a handful of faults. Blocked or broken pipe between the house and the tank is the most common, often from tree roots or ground movement. Cracked or missing lids are a safety risk and let stormwater flood the tank. A clogged outlet filter backs the whole system up. Distribution lines in the field can collapse or fill with roots. We repair all of these, and pipe relays are carried out by drainlayers registered with the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board. Where the drain itself has failed, our drain repairs team takes it from there.

Rules and consents

On-site wastewater systems are covered by the Building Code, and some work on them needs a building consent from your district or city council. Discharges to land are also managed under regional rules, so if you are replacing or upgrading a system, check the requirements with Greater Wellington Regional Council and your local council before work starts. If your system was installed under a consent with a maintenance schedule, follow that schedule.

Councils in the region differ. Upper Hutt, Hutt City, Porirua and Wellington City have their own building consent teams, and the Kāpiti Coast District Council handles both consents and its own water services. We tell you which council applies and handle the paperwork for the plumbing and drainage side of the job.

What affects the cost

Every system is different, so septic work starts with a free quote after an inspection. The main factors are:

  • Size and age of the tank, and whether it is a septic or aerated system
  • Truck access, which can be tight on hill blocks and long rural driveways
  • Whether pipe needs excavating or can be fixed from an access point
  • How much of the soakage field is affected
  • Pump, float switch or alarm repairs on pumped systems

Septic Tanks FAQs

How often should a septic tank be pumped?

It depends on tank size and how many people live in the house. A common guide is every three to five years, with an inspection in between. We can tell you what suits your system after a look.

Why does my septic tank smell?

Usually a full tank, a damaged or poorly sealed lid, a blocked vent or a cracked pipe. Most are quick fixes once the source is found.

Can heavy rain affect my septic system?

Yes. A saturated field drains slowly, and a lid that lets in surface water fills the tank faster. Both can cause backups in a wet winter.

Do you pump out septic tanks?

We arrange pump-outs with licensed suction truck operators and inspect the tank while it is empty.

Can I use drain cleaners with a septic tank?

Harsh chemical cleaners can upset the bacteria that make a septic tank work. If a drain is blocked, we clear it mechanically.

Do I need a consent to replace my septic system?

Often, yes. Building consent and regional rules can both apply. Check with Greater Wellington Regional Council and your local council, and we handle the plumbing and drainage paperwork.
