A toilet that runs all night or seeps around the base is more than an annoyance. Most homes in Wellington City, the Hutt and Porirua are not on a water meter, so a running cistern rarely shows up on a bill, but the water still goes somewhere. Tiaki Wai estimates that 37% of the region's water was lost to leaks in 2025/26, public and private combined, and it asks residents to get a registered plumber to fix leaking toilets on their own property. On the Kāpiti Coast, where homes are metered, you pay for every litre.
A slow leak at the pan connection is the other worry, because it can soften a timber floor long before anyone notices. We repair and replace toilets in homes and businesses across the region. Most cistern faults are fixed in one visit with parts from the van, and when a toilet is cracked, worn out or past saving, we supply and fit a new one and take the old one away.

Common toilet problems we fix
If any of these sound familiar, it is worth a call:
- Cistern keeps running or refilling on its own
- Weak flush, or you have to hold the button down
- Water on the floor around the base of the pan
- Toilet rocks or moves when you sit on it
- Cracks in the pan or cistern
- Slow to fill, or a noisy inlet valve
- Button stuck, broken or not returning
What usually goes wrong inside the cistern
Inside the cistern there are two main parts: the inlet valve that refills it and the outlet (flush) valve that releases water into the pan. Worn seals on the outlet valve cause the quiet trickle into the bowl that keeps the cistern topping up. A tired inlet valve can overfill and spill into the overflow. Both are standard replacement parts, and we carry the common types.
Leaks at the base usually come from the pan connector or a failed seal where the pan meets the waste pipe, or from loose fixings that let the pan move. We lift the pan, replace the seal or connector and fix it back down solidly. A wobbly pan on a timber floor sometimes reveals soft, water-damaged boards underneath. Many older Wellington homes have a subfloor you can get under, so we can usually check the joists from below and show you what we find.
How It Works
Replacing a toilet
When the pan is cracked, parts are no longer made, or the toilet is part of a bathroom renovation, a new suite is the better spend. We help you choose one that suits the existing waste position (an S-trap into the floor or a P-trap into the wall), the space and the look you want. Back-to-wall and wall-hung toilets look tidy but need more planning, especially in older houses where the wall framing and the waste position were never set up for them.
In New Zealand toilets carry a Water Efficiency Labelling Scheme (WELS) star rating showing how much water they use per flush, which makes comparing suites simple. Swapping an old single-flush cistern for a well-rated dual flush is one of the easiest water savings in an older home.
What it costs
Cistern part replacements sit at the lower end. Replacing a whole suite, moving the waste outlet, converting to a wall-hung toilet or repairing a rotten floor costs more, and we quote that before we start. On hillside homes with long flights of steps, carrying a new suite in and the old one out is part of the job, and it is built into the price you agree.
Toilets in Wellington homes
Housing across the region brings its own toilet quirks. Villas and cottages in Newtown, Mt Victoria and Thorndon often have older cisterns with parts that are hard to find, and their waste pipes can be old earthenware under the floor. In post-war state houses around Naenae, Johnsonville and Porirua, worn cistern parts and tired pan connectors are the usual faults. Homes from the 1970s and 1980s in places like Churton Park and Whitby commonly have single-flush cisterns that use far more water than a modern dual flush.
If the problem is a blockage rather than a leak, the cause may be further down the drain, such as roots in an old clay pipe. Our blocked toilets service clears it, and a CCTV drain inspection shows exactly where the trouble is.
Why Choose Cheeky's Plumbers for Toilet Repairs
Common parts on the van
Inlet valves, outlet valves, seals and pan connectors for the common cistern types are on the van, so most repairs are done in one visit.
Water-efficient replacements
When we replace a toilet, we point you to a well-rated dual-flush suite by its WELS star rating, a real saving in older homes with single-flush cisterns.
Matched to your waste outlet
We choose a suite that suits your existing S-trap or P-trap outlet, so a replacement does not turn into moving pipes unless you want it to.
Floor damage shown, not hidden
If a leaking pan has softened the timber floor, we show you before the pan goes back down and price the repair.
Old suite taken away
New toilets are fitted and leak tested, the old suite is removed.
Toilet Repairs FAQs
Why does my toilet keep running?
Usually a worn outlet valve seal lets water trickle into the bowl, or the inlet valve is overfilling into the overflow. Both are standard parts we replace.
How much does a toilet repair cost in Wellington?
We confirm the price before starting.
I am not on a water meter. Does a running toilet still matter?
Yes. You may not see it on a bill, but the water is wasted, and Tiaki Wai asks residents to have leaks on their property fixed by a registered plumber. On the Kāpiti Coast homes are metered, so you pay for it directly.
Why is water leaking around the base of my toilet?
Often a failed pan connector or seal, or loose fixings. Left alone it can damage the floor, so get it checked.
Can you install a wall-hung toilet?
Yes. It needs an in-wall frame and cistern, so it is easiest during a renovation, but it can be retrofitted.
What does the WELS star rating mean on a toilet?
It shows how water efficient the toilet is and its litres per flush. More stars means less water used.
