A waste disposal unit sits under the kitchen sink and grinds food scraps into fine particles that wash away with the water. Used well, it keeps scraps out of the bin and the kitchen cleaner. Used badly, or fitted to a drain that cannot cope, it jams, leaks or adds to blocked drains further down the line.
We install, replace and repair waste disposal units in kitchens across Wellington, the Hutt Valley, Porirua and the Kāpiti Coast. Before fitting one we check that the sink, the waste pipe and the power supply suit it, and when an old unit fails we give you a straight answer on whether it is worth repairing.
Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

Signs your disposal unit needs attention
Most faults show up in one of these ways:
- Hums but will not spin: usually jammed
- Does nothing at all: tripped reset button, switch or power fault
- Water leaking from the body or the base of the unit
- Leaks at the sink flange or the dishwasher connection
- Slow draining, or water backing up into the sink
- Loud grinding or rattling
- A bad smell from the sink that cleaning does not shift
Repairs and replacements
A humming unit is normally jammed by something hard, such as a bone, a fruit stone or a teaspoon. We isolate the power, free the grinding plate and reset the motor. Leaks from the sink flange or connections can often be resealed. Leaks from the body of the unit usually mean the internal seals have failed or the housing has corroded, and a replacement is the honest recommendation.
When we replace a unit, we match the mounting and outlet where possible to keep the job simple, connect the dishwasher inlet if you have one, and check the fall on the waste pipe so ground food actually travels away rather than settling in the trap.
How It Works
Older drains on Wellington sections
Whether a disposal unit is a good idea depends a lot on the drain it feeds. Many older villas and cottages in suburbs like Newtown, Brooklyn and Kelburn have long runs of original drain, and on hillside sections those runs can be steep in places and close to flat in others. Ground food moves well down a steep pipe and settles where the fall flattens out, especially if grease goes down with it. Roots in old clay joints give scraps something to catch on.
On sections built by cutting and filling a slope, drains can also sag as fill settles, leaving dips where food waste collects. If your kitchen sink already drains slowly or the drain has blocked before, we suggest a CCTV drain inspection before fitting a unit, so you are not adding load to a pipe that is already struggling.
What not to put down a disposal unit
Most problems come down to what goes in. Keep these out:
- Fats, oils and grease, which set further down the pipe
- Stringy food such as corn husks, celery and onion skins
- Large bones and fruit stones
- Coffee grounds and eggshells in quantity
- Anything that is not food
Sewer, septic and businesses
Most homes in Wellington City, the Hutt Valley and Porirua drain to the public wastewater network, where Tiaki Wai now runs the pipes, and a correctly fitted disposal unit is generally fine there. Homes on a septic tank are different: a disposal unit adds solids to the tank, so we only recommend one where the tank is well maintained and sized for it.
Commercial kitchens are a separate case. Food businesses that discharge fats and food waste to the sewer need a trade waste consent, which Tiaki Wai has administered for the four councils since 1 July 2026, and Kāpiti has its own Trade Waste Bylaw. If you run a café or restaurant, talk to us about your grease trap before adding any disposal equipment.
Pricing
Unjamming and resealing sit at the lower end. Supplying and fitting a new unit depends on the model and whether new waste pipework or a dedicated power point is needed. Any electrical work is done by a registered electrician, and the price is agreed before we start.
Why Choose Cheeky's Plumbers for Waste Disposal Units
Sink, drain and power checked
Before fitting a unit we check the sink, the fall on the waste pipe and the power supply, so ground food actually leaves the house.
Old drains looked at first
If your kitchen drain has a history of blocking, we suggest a camera check before adding a unit, rather than finding out the hard way.
Straight repair or replace advice
A jammed unit or leaking flange is usually repairable. A leaking body means failed seals, and we tell you a new unit is the better spend.
Dishwasher connected properly
We connect the dishwasher inlet when we fit a new unit, and any new power point is done by a registered electrician.
Waste Disposal Units FAQs
Why is my waste disposal unit humming but not working?
It is usually jammed. Turn the power off at the switch and never put your hand inside. We can free it and reset it.
How much does it cost to install a waste disposal unit in Wellington?
A new unit depends on the model and whether new pipework or power is needed.
Will a disposal unit block my old drain?
It can if the drain is already rough, root-affected or sagging. A camera inspection tells us whether your drain will cope before we fit one.
Can I have a waste disposal unit with a septic tank?
It is possible but needs care. The tank must be well maintained and sized for the extra solids. We check before recommending one.
Can a leaking disposal unit be repaired?
Leaks at the sink flange or connections often can be. Leaks from the body usually mean the unit needs replacing.
Can a disposal unit connect to my dishwasher?
Most can. We fit the dishwasher inlet and check the connection does not leak.
