Everyday plumbing in Wellington covers a lot of ground, from a pipe that lets go under a Kelburn villa at midnight to a toby that has not been turned in decades. This page gathers our general plumbing services for homes anywhere from Island Bay to Ōtaki, so you can find the right one quickly.
Start with what you can see or hear. Water where it should not be points to a leak or a burst. Weak flow, banging or rusty water points to the pipes themselves. If water is actively spreading, skip the reading and ring us, because the first job is shutting it off. You will know the price before a single fitting is touched.
Our Plumbing Services
Emergency Plumber
For water spreading through the house, sewage coming back up or a gas smell, any hour of the day or night, including holidays.
View serviceLeak Detection
When you suspect water is escaping somewhere you cannot see, such as damp walls, warm floor tiles or a Kāpiti meter that keeps ticking.
View serviceBurst Pipes
For a pipe that has split or let go, stopping the flow first and then fixing the failed section properly.
View serviceRepiping
When old galvanised steel or grey plastic pipe keeps springing new leaks, replacing the run is often cheaper than patching it again.
View serviceLow Water Pressure
For showers that dribble, baths that take an age to fill or pressure that collapses whenever someone else turns on a tap.
View serviceBackflow Testing
Annual testing for irrigation, rural supply and commercial backflow devices, with results written up for your records or building WOF.
View serviceGutter Repairs
When gutters overflow in a southerly, joints drip or downpipes come loose, letting rain run down your walls instead of away.
View serviceShut-Off Valves
For a seized toby, a valve that will not close or a house with no easy way to turn the water off.
View serviceWater Hammer
When pipes thump, knock or rattle when a mixer snaps closed or the washer stops drawing water, usually a pressure shock or loose clips.
View serviceWater Main Repairs
For a leak on the buried pipe between the toby and your house, often showing up as a soggy strip of lawn.
View serviceWhich plumbing service do you need?
Match the symptom to the service and you will usually land in the right place. A damp patch with no obvious cause is a job for leak detection. A pipe that has clearly split needs burst pipe repairs straight away. If leaks keep turning up in different rooms, the pipe itself is the problem and repiping is worth pricing.
Noise and pressure are their own category. Thumping after a tap closes is water hammer, while weak flow at every tap points to low water pressure. Outside, overflowing gutters belong with spouting and roof plumbing, and a wet strip between the street and the house usually means the buried supply main.
What general plumbing costs
Repiping and water main repairs depend on length and access, so they are quoted free after a look.
Whatever the job, you get a fixed price before any tools come out, so you can say yes or no with the real number in front of you.
Wellington homes and their pipes
A lot of the region's housing is older villas and bungalows on timber piles. Many still have original galvanised steel pipe, which corrodes from the inside and shows up as brown water, falling pressure and pinhole leaks. The upside is that a crawl space under the floor usually makes replacement easier than owners fear.
Ownership matters when something leaks. Public pipes in the city, the Hutt and Porirua now belong to Tiaki Wai, the council-owned company that replaced Wellington Water in mid-2026, and Kāpiti's council manages its own. Everything from the toby to your house is yours, and that is the part we fix. After a decent shake, look under the house for drips and check rigid joints, since ground movement is a common reason pipes fail here.
- Find your toby before you need it and make sure it turns
- Fit isolation valves under sinks and toilets
- Look under the floor once a year for damp or rust
- Know whether you are metered: Kāpiti homes are, most others are not
Plumbing Questions
Do you charge a call-out fee?
Once we have seen the problem we quote one firm figure for the repair. You decide whether to go ahead before any work begins.
Is a leak on my property my problem or the council's?
If it is between the toby and your house, it belongs to you. Report anything on the road side of the toby to Tiaki Wai, phone 0800 842 549, or to the district council if you are in Kāpiti.
How do I know if my pipes need replacing?
Repeated leaks in different places, rusty or brown water and pressure that has slowly dropped are the classic signs, especially in older houses that still have their first pipework. We can inspect and tell you honestly whether a repair or a repipe makes more sense.
Do you cover the Hutt Valley, Porirua and Kāpiti?
Yes. Our plumbers work right across the region, from the city and Lower Hutt to Upper Hutt, Porirua and up the coast to Ōtaki, with the same fixed pricing wherever you are.
