A blocked drain rarely comes out of nowhere. Roots creep through old joints, fat coats the pipe wall a little more each week, and silt settles in any low spot. By the time water backs up into the shower or the gully trap overflows, the line has usually been narrowing for months.
Regular drain cleaning deals with that build-up while the drain is still flowing. We scour the full line, cut back roots, clear grease and silt, and finish with a camera check so you can see the pipe is genuinely clear.

Who benefits most from regular drain cleaning
Not every property needs it. A modern PVC line with no trees nearby can go for decades without attention. These are the places where routine cleaning pays for itself:
- Older villas and cottages with original earthenware or concrete drains
- Sections with large trees or bush near the drain line, common in Karori, Kelburn and Khandallah
- Homes that have had two or more blockages in the past few years
- Cafés, takeaways and commercial kitchens, even with a grease trap
- Rentals and flats with heavy, unpredictable use
- Properties about to be sold, where clear footage helps the sale
What a proper drain clean involves
A clean is more thorough than an unblock. We run the full length of the line from the furthest fixture to the boundary, not just far enough to get water moving. Depending on what is in there, that means a rotating root cutter, a chain flail for scale and grease, or hydro jetting for silt and sludge.
Gully traps and inspection points are cleaned out and checked. Afterwards we run a CCTV drain inspection so you can see the pipe wall is clear, and so we can spot cracks, sags or displaced joints that cleaning alone will not fix. You get the footage to keep.
How It Works
How often should drains be cleaned?
There is no single answer, and anyone who gives you one without looking at the pipe is guessing. As a rule of thumb, root-affected earthenware lines often need attention every year because roots regrow from the same joints. Commercial kitchens can need it far more often. A domestic PVC line with a one-off problem might not need another clean for years.
After the first clean and camera check we will tell you honestly which group you are in. If a line needs cleaning more than once a year, that is usually the point where a drain repair or pipe relining becomes cheaper than ongoing maintenance, and we will show you the comparison.
Your drain, your council: who looks after what
Cleaning is usually the owner's job on the part of the drain inside your boundary, but the rules for the wastewater lateral between your house and the public main differ across the region. Tiaki Wai, which now runs the network for four councils, sets them out by council:
- Wellington City: the council looks after any part of the lateral in a public road, and owners are responsible for the parts on their own land
- Lower Hutt: owners look after the lateral all the way to where it joins the council main
- Upper Hutt: private laterals are the owner's, and on a public lateral the council may reimburse reasonable costs if CCTV confirms a defect such as roots or a collapse
- Porirua: owners look after laterals within their boundary, and the council owns them from the boundary to the main
- Kāpiti Coast: wastewater is run by Kāpiti Coast District Council, so check with the council if the problem may be on its side
Cost of drain cleaning
The final price depends on the length of the line, the number of access points, whether we need the jetter as well as the drain machine, and how heavily the pipe is packed with roots or grease. Steep hillside sections where gear has to be carried down steps can take a little longer.
Scheduled maintenance customers get a fixed price agreed upfront for each visit. Commercial kitchens and multi-unit sites are priced on line length and how often they need cleaning.
Looking after your drains between cleans
Most of what ends up in a drain was put there by the people using it. Wipe greasy pans with a paper towel before washing, fit strainers in the kitchen sink and shower, and bin wet wipes, cotton buds and sanitary products. Outside, keep the gully trap grate clear of leaves and make sure its surround sits above ground level so heavy rain cannot flood into it. If you find a downpipe feeding the gully trap, it needs redirecting to stormwater, and our gully trap team can sort that.
For food businesses, Tiaki Wai's grease trap guidance asks for traps to be cleaned by an approved contractor under a service contract, food scraps to be binned before rinsing, and mechanical traps to have a double mesh sink screen. Regular line cleaning between the kitchen and the trap keeps you on the right side of those expectations.

Drain Cleaning FAQs
What is the difference between drain cleaning and drain unblocking?
Unblocking gets water moving again past a single blockage. Cleaning scours the whole line, cuts back roots and removes build-up so the next blockage does not form as quickly.
How much does drain cleaning cost in Wellington?
Longer lines, extra access points or jetting add to that, and we give you the price before we start.
Will cleaning get rid of tree roots for good?
No. Cleaning cuts roots back to the pipe wall, but they regrow from the same joints. If roots return every year, relining or replacing the affected section is the permanent fix.
Do I need a camera inspection with a drain clean?
We recommend it. It confirms the line is properly clear and shows damage that cleaning cannot fix, so you are not paying for cleans on a pipe that really needs repairing.
Can regular cleaning help with drain smells?
Often, yes. Smells usually come from sludge sitting in a sag or a dry trap. Cleaning removes the build-up, and the camera shows whether a sag is the real cause.
Should a café have its drains cleaned even with a grease trap?
Yes. A grease trap catches most fat but not all of it, and the line between the kitchen and the trap still collects build-up. Regular cleaning helps you avoid overflows and trade waste problems.
