Raumati Beach was laid out as a seaside resort in 1908, and its first general store was built in 1919. Today Raumati Beach and Raumati South are commuter communities that, with Paraparaumu, are among the fastest growing urban areas in New Zealand. Kāpiti Coast District Council ranks Raumati as the most vulnerable area on the coast by number of private properties at risk from erosion. Most blockages in Raumati come down to a short list: wipes in the toilet line, fat in the kitchen waste, tree roots in old clay pipe, or a sag where the ground has moved. We clear it and tell you which one it was, so you know whether it is likely to come back.
Raumati blocked drains behind the seawall
Raumati Beach was laid out as a seaside resort in 1908, and many early beach houses were built close to the shore. Kāpiti Coast District Council now ranks Raumati as the most vulnerable area on the coast by number of private properties at risk from erosion, and a 1976 storm took up to 15 metres of coastline. For drains, that matters in two ways. Homes near the seawall are on sandy, low ground where lines have little fall, and sand blown and carried off the beach gets into outdoor gullies and settles in the trap.
The older beach houses may have drains that were patched and extended over the decades, so the layout does not always match what an owner expects. We locate the line before clearing so we know where the access points really are, then camera it if the blockage has happened before. Newer homes in the commuter streets of Raumati Beach and Raumati South have modern pipe, and blockages there usually come down to what went down the drain.
Low-lying ground near the Wharemauku Stream can be slow to clear in heavy rain, so a downpipe running into a gully trap is a common reason for overflows. Kāpiti Coast District Council manages wastewater here independently of Tiaki Wai, and footage of where a fault lies helps when talking to the council about which part is whose.
Local tip: After a storm along Raumati Beach, lift the outdoor gully grate and clear out any sand before it sets in the trap.
Blocked Drains in Raumati: Local Factors
Sand carried in from the beach, decks and outdoor showers settles in coastal drains and slowly chokes them. Near the shore we check the gully trap first, because sand is often the whole story.

Blocked Drains Raumati FAQs
Our Raumati beach house dates from the resort years. Where are the drain access points likely to be?
Hard to say without looking, because older beach houses may have been altered over the years. We use a locator and camera to find the line and its access points before clearing it.
Do you need to come inside to clear a blocked drain in Raumati?
Usually not. Most drains can be cleared from the gully trap or an outside inspection point.
Can you clear a blocked drain at night in Raumati?
Yes. If sewage is backing up or the drain is overflowing, we can come out after hours.
