European settlement at Seatoun began around 1899, but growth waited for the Seatoun tunnel, built in 1906 and 1907, and the tram in December 1907. Houses stand on a pocket of flat land on the eastern side of Miramar Peninsula, and in neighbouring Breaker Bay they sit beneath the cliffs. Seatoun is one of Wellington's most affluent suburbs. Most blockages in Seatoun come down to a short list: wipes in the toilet line, fat in the kitchen waste, tree roots in old clay pipe, or a sag where the ground has moved. We clear it and tell you which one it was, so you know whether it is likely to come back.
Seatoun drains: low raised ground, extended homes and Breaker Bay access
Much of Seatoun stands on land that the Haowhenua earthquake lifted from the sea around 1460, a low pocket of flat ground on the eastern side of the peninsula. Low ground gives a drain little room to fall, and soil like this can move in a big quake. A pipe that has settled unevenly holds a pool of water where fat and paper build up, so on Seatoun's flat streets we pay attention to whether a line has lost its grade as well as what is stuck in it.
Many of the larger homes here have been extended, some more than once, and each extension usually joins new waste pipes into the existing drain. Extra bathrooms and ensuites put more flow through a line that was laid for a smaller house, and the junctions where additions meet the original run are the usual blockage points. We clear from the gully trap or a cleanout, then flush each fixture in turn to check the whole system, not just the one that backed up.
Breaker Bay is a different job. Homes there sit beneath the cliffs with little room around them, so we confirm where the access points are before we arrive and bring gear that can be carried. Wind and salt spray at the harbour entrance also corrode outdoor fittings, including grates and cleanout caps, which may seize or crack. On Seatoun properties, the lateral inside the boundary is the owner's to maintain.
Local tip: Check that the cleanout cap on your Seatoun drain still unscrews, because salt air can seize it and slow down a blocked drain call.
Blocked Drains in Seatoun: Local Factors
Sand carried in from the beach, decks and outdoor showers settles in coastal drains and slowly chokes them. Near the shore we check the gully trap first, because sand is often the whole story.

Blocked Drains Seatoun FAQs
Our Seatoun home has had two extensions. Could that be why the drain keeps blocking?
It can be. Each addition joins new pipes into the old drain, and those junctions are common blockage points. A camera run shows whether one is badly set or the line is overloaded.
Do you need to come inside to clear a blocked drain in Seatoun?
Usually not. Most drains can be cleared from the gully trap or an outside inspection point.
Can you clear a blocked drain at night in Seatoun?
Yes. If sewage is backing up or the drain is overflowing, we can come out after hours.
