The Eastern and Southern Suburbs run from hillside Hataitai, built from the early 1900s to the 1950s, across the flat Rongotai isthmus at Kilbirnie and Lyall Bay to the Miramar basin, home of New Zealand's first state house, and out to the 1920s homes of Island Bay and the harbour-entrance suburb of Seatoun. Town water in Wellington, the Hutt Valley, Porirua and the Kāpiti Coast is treated and monitored, and Taumata Arowai regulates drinking water suppliers nationally. Plenty of households still choose to filter it, usually to change the taste or smell, catch sediment after nearby mains work, or simply give the family water they enjoy drinking. On tank and bore supplies, filtration is about safety as much as taste. We supply and install water filters for Wellington homes, from a single under-sink filter for the kitchen tap to a whole-house system on the main line, and we fit the replacement cartridges when they fall due.
Filtration in the Eastern and Southern Suburbs: sediment after network work and salt-proof housings
The Eastern and Southern Suburbs are supplied through the Tiaki Wai network, which manages around 2,543 km of pipe that is largely 30 to 100 years old, and loses an average of 37 percent of its water to leaks. Crews find and repair those leaks constantly, and after work on a nearby main it is common to see a short burst of discoloured water or fine sediment at the tap. A sediment pre-filter on the incoming supply catches that before it reaches your fixtures and appliances, and it is a common reason people in Miramar, Kilbirnie and Island Bay ask us about filtration. Appliances with fine valves, such as dishwashers and instant hot water units, benefit most.
Taste is the other main driver. A carbon filter at the kitchen tap improves taste and smell for drinking and cooking, and it suits homes of any size. Because Tiaki Wai classes the supply as soft, you do not need a softener, and money is better spent on a good quality cartridge system with easy-change housings. Under-bench units suit Kilbirnie's apartments, where shared pipes belong to the building, and we size cartridges to your household's use so changes fall at sensible intervals.
Where the filter goes needs thought near the sea. Lyall Bay, Island Bay and Seatoun are all within reach of salt spray, and much of the coast here is likely in the high corrosion zone under NZS 3604. A whole-house filter mounted outside is exposed to that salt and to strong wind, so we prefer to fit housings under the house, in a garage or inside a protective cabinet. In Hataitai, where homes are on the slopes of Mount Victoria, the subfloor is usually the best spot, with good access for cartridge changes.
Local tip: If water runs cloudy after crews have been working on the main in your street, run a cold tap until it clears before using the washing machine.

Water Filters Eastern and Southern Suburbs FAQs
Where should a whole-house filter go on a Lyall Bay home?
Somewhere sheltered from salt spray and wind, such as under the house, in the garage or in a protective cabinet. Housings mounted in the open near the beach corrode faster.
Is Wellington tap water safe to drink?
Network water is treated before it reaches you, and Taumata Arowai regulates drinking water suppliers. Filtration on town supply is mainly about taste, smell and sediment.
Can you make tank water safe to drink?
Yes, with the right mix of first-flush diversion, filtration and UV treatment, plus regular maintenance and testing.
