Central Wellington mixes the city's oldest housing with its newest. Mt Victoria, Newtown and Thorndon are mostly 19th-century villas and cottages on small lots with narrow side yards, Kelburn and Brooklyn climb the hills behind the city, and Te Aro has filled with apartments since 2000, many converted from offices. We start with where your water comes from and what you want to change, then recommend the simplest system that does the job. No sales pitch for equipment you do not need.
Water filters in Central Wellington: under-bench units for apartments, old pipe in villas
Central Wellington's water comes through the Tiaki Wai network, and Tiaki Wai classes the supply to the city as soft, under 100 mg/L of calcium carbonate. That matters when you are choosing a filter. A water softener, often sold for hard-water areas, is rarely what a central city home needs. Treatment also adjusts the water's pH to reduce corrosion in pipes. Most people who ask us about filtration here want better taste at the kitchen tap, or are seeing sediment or discolouration, and the right system depends on which of those it is.
Apartments are a big part of the inner city, especially in Te Aro, where many buildings were converted from offices and new rooftop apartments have been added on top. In an apartment, an under-bench filter with its own drinking tap is the usual answer. It fits inside the kitchen cabinetry, does not touch the building's shared pipes and does not need body corporate approval in most cases. Cartridges are changed from inside the cupboard, so there is no need for plant room access. Some units also have an indicator on the tap so you know when a change is due.
In the older hill suburbs the question is often the house rather than the supply. Thorndon, Mt Victoria and Newtown have many timber villas and cottages, some with original galvanised pipe or decades of mixed repairs under the floor. If water runs brown or rusty at the start of the day and clears after a minute, the cause may be corroding pipe inside the house. A filter can catch the particles, but replacing the old pipe is the real fix, and we will tell you honestly which one you need. Any new pipe in a character home is kept out of sight.
Local tip: Run the cold tap for a few seconds first thing in the morning in an older villa; if the water starts discoloured, ask us to check the internal pipe before buying a filter.

Water Filters Central Wellington FAQs
Do I need a water softener in my Te Aro apartment?
Usually not. Tiaki Wai classes the supply as soft, so softeners are rarely needed. An under-bench filter is a better fit if you want to improve taste or remove particles at the kitchen tap.
What does NSF certification mean?
The filter has been independently tested to reduce specific contaminants under an NSF/ANSI standard. Always check which contaminants are listed.
How often do filter cartridges need changing?
Typically every six to twelve months, depending on the cartridge and your water use. UV lamps are usually replaced yearly.
