Ōtaki is a small town at the northern end of the Kāpiti Coast, set in an agricultural district of market gardens and lifestyle blocks. Ōtaki Beach, between the Ōtaki River and the Waitohu Stream, has a residential community of both permanent and holiday homes. A gas leak is one of the few plumbing problems where minutes really matter. Natural gas and LPG both have an odour added so that a leak can be smelt, and if you can smell it, there is enough gas present to take seriously.

Ōtaki gas leaks: lifestyle block LPG, beach baches and long pipe runs

Ōtaki sits at the northern end of the Kāpiti Coast and the Wellington Region, in a district of market gardens and lifestyle blocks. Natural gas is not part of Powerco's listed areas here, so homes and sheds run on LPG cylinders, sometimes with long pipe runs out to a workshop, an outdoor kitchen or a separate unit. The longer the run and the more joints along it, the more places a leak can hide, so we test the whole installation in stages to narrow it down. Market garden sheds and packing areas sometimes have heaters or burners on the same system.

Rural properties bring rural risks. Vehicles, mowers and stock can knock exposed pipe or cylinders, and a damaged bottle connection is one of the most common leaks on lifestyle blocks. Rodents sometimes chew flexible hoses in sheds and sleepouts. We replace damaged sections, protect exposed pipe with sleeving or guards, and move bottles out of traffic paths where we can. Where bottles stand on soft ground, we set them on a firm base so they cannot lean and strain the pigtails.

Ōtaki Beach is a mix of permanent and holiday homes between the Ōtaki River and the Waitohu Stream, and holiday homes can sit closed up for months with bottles still connected. Salt air keeps working on the regulator the whole time. Before the first stay of the season, a smell near the bottles or a burner that will not light properly is worth a call rather than a guess. A 1993 Greater Wellington study also found Ōtaki may have liquefied in past earthquakes, which is a good reason to keep flexible connections at appliances and to have the system checked after a strong shake. We also make sure every cylinder is chained upright.

Local tip: If your Ōtaki Beach bach is empty for long stretches, turn the cylinder valves off when you leave and have the regulator checked once a year.

Gas Leak Repairs Ōtaki FAQs

Can you come out to a rural Ōtaki property for a gas leak?

Yes. We cover Ōtaki and the surrounding lifestyle blocks, and we bring what we need to test long LPG runs to sheds, sleepouts and outdoor kitchens.

What should I do if I smell gas in my house?

Do not use switches or flames, turn off the gas at the meter or bottles if safe, open doors and windows, get everyone outside and call from there. Call 111 if the smell is strong.

Is there natural gas on the Kāpiti Coast?

Powerco's natural gas network covers Wellington, the Hutt Valley and Porirua but does not list Kāpiti, so most Kāpiti homes use LPG. Check Powerco's address checker if you are unsure.
