Whitby: 1970s hillside homes above the Pāuatahanui Inlet

Whitby's first sections were auctioned in 1970, and some two thousand houses had been built by 1998, spread over the hills along the southern shore of the Pāuatahanui Inlet. That means the earliest homes in the Adventure and Endeavour neighbourhoods are now well over fifty years old. Original hot water cylinders, tap bodies and supply pipe in those houses are due for replacement, and the typical emergency begins when a cylinder leaks from the base or a valve on top starts pouring water.

Nearly every Whitby section is on a slope, so drains and stormwater pipes run a long way to the street. A blockage partway down a sewer line can surface at a gully trap near the house, while a cracked stormwater pipe can let water soak into a bank. We clear blockages from the nearest access point and make sure roof water is reaching the network.

Homes closest to the inlet get salt air on outdoor taps and fittings, which wears them faster than further up the hill. Newer homes in the eastern hills are a different case, with modern fittings where problems are more often a failed hose or a fixture. Main access is via State Highway 58 from the Paremata Roundabout, which we factor in when we give you an arrival estimate. In Porirua your part of the lateral ends at your boundary, and the council handles it from there to the main.

Local tip: If your Whitby home still has its original 1970s cylinder, check the floor of the cupboard for damp now and then, as a slow weep is often the first sign.
